Wolfpack's Kaaya Mehta Powers Through McKinney in Season Opener

Junior Kaaya Mehta hit two home runs and drove in five as the Plano West Wolves defeated McKinney 15-4 on Monday. Mehta homered in the third and fourth innings.

A wild pitch in the first inning put West on the board in the top of the first. McKinney singled in the bottom of the first to drive in the tying run. But the Wolves ran away with the game in the third inning. Sophomore Abby Cuellar tripled to score two runs. Then a home run over the center field fence by Mehta followed to extend the lead 5-1.

Plano West scored six runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning. Cuellar tripled again to drive in two more runs, Mehta homered to left field, scoring three, and Senior Carra Cleaves pushed a run acroos the plate with a fielder's choice. The game ended early in the 6th with a run-rule victory by West over McKinney.

Three Plano West pitchers - Junior Marlee Flanigan, Cleaves, and Senior M.C. Pollacia - combined efforts throwing two innings each with Flanigan starting and earning the win. On offense, the Wolves amassed 13 hits with Cuellar managing four of those hits in five at bats. Sophomore Abby Jennings and Junior Izzy Dunn also pulled off multiple hits at the plate.

Plano West heads to New Braunfels on Thursday with some tough action from around the state.
