It was another winning week for the Plano West softball team. The Wolves met up with the Arlington Colts in a battle for the Area Championship in a best of three series. The Wolves made sure the third game was never necessary.
Game 1
Like the week before, Plano West took game 1 in a run-rule, besting Arlington 13 to 1. The Wolves jumped ahead early, putting two runs on the board in the first inning following an RBI single by Freshman Abby Jennings. The big offensive innings came for the Wolves in the sixth inning when they scored five runs. Plano West batters putting up hits and RBIs in the inning were Senior Brooke Hilton and Sophomores Kaaya Mehta and Izzy Dunn.
The Wolves had 12 hits in the game. Mehta, Dunn, Jennings, and Freshmen Abby Cuellar each managed two hits, but it was Mehta who led the team at the plate with two home runs in the game. She went deep in both the fifth and six innings.
Junior Carra Cleaves started in the circle and earned the win for the Wolves. She pitched three innings and game up three hits, striking out two. Sophomore Marlee Flanigan entered the game in the fourth, throwing three innings of her own with three strikeouts and only one hit. The only run scored by Arlington came at the hands of an unfortunate error.
Game 2
Plano West had no intention of playing a third game in the series, winning big in their second game over Arlington 8 to 2. The Wolves got off to another quick start, putting two runs on the board in the first inning with a sac fly by Hilton and a sac fly by Jennings. Plano West's biggest offensive inning came in the third with four runs. Hilton, Jennings, Dunn, and Freshman Abby Chunn each had an RBI.
Junior MC Pollacia started in the circle and earned the win. She pitched four innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out five and walking none. Cleaves pitched three innings in relief out of the bullpen. She gave up no runs on three hits, striking out three and walking none as well.
The Wolves racked up another nine hits in the game. Dunn and Senior Adayah Wallace each put up three hits in the game to lead the offense.
With the sweep, Plano West was crowned Area Champions. They will play a one-game playoff against Denton Guyer in the Regional Quarterfinals round.
